If the brain was a series of muscles, then Solution Focused Hypnotherapy would be one of the best gyms in the world.
Humans naturally tend to be quite problem-focused. This is great when you’re facing practical problems, like solving a sudoku puzzle or doing some DIY, because it pushes you through until you’ve finished the task. However, when we start facing more abstract issues like anxiety, depression or addictions, we can start to struggle.
If we spend a day thinking about a problem we don’t know how to solve, then the problem becomes all we see.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is an evidence-based practice that trains the mind into a more positive space. Instead of trying to create the absence of the problem, we work to create the presence of the solution.
Once you can start imagining where you want to be, you can start working out how to get there.
Just like the body, if you exercise specific areas of the brain, they will get stronger. When Albert Einstein died, the autopsy showed that the part of his brain that dealt with mathematical calculations was three times bigger than that of an average person. He spent his whole life essentially ‘working out’ that one area. This is called Neuroplasticity, and it is our main tool in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. We use a combination of talk therapy and hypnosis to both build new, beneficial areas of the brain, and reduce the intensity of any traumatic incidents that have been stored in our memory, letting us move on to a content and satisfying life.
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis, or ‘trance’ is a clinical term for any shift in focus. To put it very simply, it is when you access your imagination, or your memory, and focus on the pictures, sounds, and feelings you find there. You access trance whenever you stop and think about a challenging problem, or focus on developing an interesting new idea. It is perfectly natural, and when you’re really focused on that mental image, you may even lose track of time or not notice something directly in front of you because you’re concentrating so intently.
In a clinical setting, we combine this with muscle relaxation and breathing techniques to make the whole experience feel almost like a pleasant nap. This results in your subconscious being presented with clear goals that it can then work towards achieving. It can even be used to access and change traumatic memories, removing the painful emotions from them.
Ask yourself; when you set out on a journey, do you spend that journey walking backwards, looking at where you have come from, or do you look forward to your future?
